History

Est. 2012

The Brown Healthcare Investment Group—originally the Brown Biotechnology Investment Group—was founded by Joshua Cohen, Biomedical Engineering ‘14, and Aneesha Mehta, Science and Society '13, in 2012. Josh went on to co-found Amylyx Pharmaceuticals, a clinical stage pharmaceutical company dedicated to providing innovative, disease-modifying solutions for neurodegenerative diseases. Aneesha spent her first few years following Brown in Healthcare Equity Research at Fidelity, then went on to Bain Capital Ventures, where she focuses in the Healthcare space.

What is today the Brown Healthcare Investment Group was founded to allow students the opportunity to learn more about healthcare investing from both financial and strategic perspectives. With this ethos in mind, our group attracts students with passions at the intersection of science, medicine, and finance. Our members come from a wide range of academic backgrounds, and all students are welcome regardless of experience. We host weekly stock pitches, industry panels, and educational workshops.

Our group transitioned from the Brown Biotechnology Investment Group to the Brown Healthcare Investment Group in between the 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 school years. As the group continued to expand—and in turn the interests of our members—compounded with receiving funding from Brown University, our portfolio grew beyond the biotech space and into the more general healthcare space, particularly for the sake of diversification and risk mitigation.
